About Deborah

Deborah Klein Lopez is an Agoura Hills City Councilmember and former Mayor running to represent the people and neighborhoods that make up Assembly District 42. A graduate of Northwestern University, Deborah started her career in financial analysis and project management with international companies such as Reuters and J.D. Power and Associates. She later transitioned to public service in the California State Senate and Assembly and built strong relationships within the community, working with constituents to devise solutions to the issues impacting them.

Deborah’s priorities include: standing up to Trump to make California more affordable, especially to lower the cost of healthcare, prescription drugs, housing, food, and gas; improving preparedness for future wildfires and increasing access to home insurance coverage; creating jobs and expanding opportunities for apprenticeships and vocational training; stabilizing education funding for better public schools; and reducing crime for safer neighborhoods.

Deborah and her husband, Fabricio, live in Agoura Hills, in the district where she grew up and they raised their three children.

Deborah was elected to the City Council in November 2018, two days before the Woolsey Fire ripped through Agoura Hills. In her first days in office, she jumped into action, working on wildfire recovery and upgrading emergency communication systems to keep residents informed. She has helped lead her community through times of crisis, including extreme weather events and COVID-19. She has cut through red tape to make it easier for small businesses to survive and thrive. She has advocated for enhanced public safety at the municipal level on the Council’s Law Enforcement/Fire/Emergency Response Subcommittee and at the state level as a member of the League of California Cities Public Safety Committee.

Clean Power Alliance

Sustainability and preparedness are top priorities for Deborah. Under her leadership as Mayor, the City Council passed the first Climate Action and Adaptation Plan in the region. She also serves as Immediate Past Chair of the Board and current Board Member of Clean Power Alliance (CPA), the largest 100% renewable energy provider in the nation, a public alternative to Southern California Edison, and a not-for-profit that allows ratepayers to save on their electricity bills. At CPA, Deborah has helped created over 4,000 jobs—and counting. Leading her area to renewable energy via her role on Clean Power Alliance is one of Deborah’s proudest achievements—a single action that immediately reduced the local carbon footprint by 10%.

Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains

Since 2017, Deborah has served on the board of this public agency, whose mission is to promote land stewardship and resource conservation through ecological research, conservation planning and design, habitat restoration, and environmental education.

Local Public Schools and Measure E

Deborah led the development and adoption by voters of Measure E, a four-city, two-county ballot measure that secured millions of stable funding for our school district. She also served at the highest levels of parent leadership at Yerba Buena Elementary School, Lindero Canyon Middle School, and Agoura High School, including district-level roles on the Superintendent’s Advisory Board. And she’s the proud recipient of the 2017 Friend of Education Award from the Las Virgenes Educators Association.

Conejo Valley Meal and Shelter Program

For nearly 20 years, Deborah managed a weekly winter shelter and dinner program for the homeless and underserved population of the Conejo Valley, coordinating hundreds of volunteers each year and keeping the most vulnerable members of the community off the streets overnight.

National Park Service/National Wildlife Federation

As a Councilmember, Deborah has fought to support and expand local habitat connectivity, including helping launch the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, the world’s largest urban wildlife crossing and a national model for protecting migratory species and promoting ecosystem resilience. She also volunteered with the National Park Service, hiking out with bait, stakes, and camera equipment to maintain wildlife research cameras hidden in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area.
